{An important game for me and Hamburg! In retrospect it doesn't look that way
but before the game I had a feeling this game could be the deciding factor. So
far my bundesliga-season has been disappointing. Prior to this game I was on
minus 2, and I never booked a 'minus-season' before in the bundesliga, so I
very much wanted to level the score in this weekend. Unfortunately saturday
was a setback when I only drew against a lower rated opponent. He played well
but I was still kinda annoyed. In general the season have been a lot like that
with draws in excellent positions against Babula, Firman and Howell and
unlucky defeats against Vallejo and Grandelius (In a good season I wouldn't
lose those games).} 1. e4 {So here we are against Schneider. I have played him
once before (a game I won) and I had a feeling he didn't like to play me. He
seemed very restless (so much it was a bit disturbing actually). He is a
dangerous player with a very active style. He likes to do something with every
move. His openings are very 'junior-like' and in general contains no long
mainlines. As You probably all know I play all serious first moves with white.
Here my aim is to get a quiet position where his tendency to 'do something'
will backfire. He wants an open fight I want quite manouevering.} e5 2. Nf3 d6
{I was hoping for the other move and was planning to play some slow d3 system
in the Spanish.} 3. d4 exd4 {Yes of course! A system that fits his style
perfectly.} 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 Be7 {Here I thought for some time. I have both
studied systems with Be2 and g3 and lately Bf4 followed by long castle. I
believe the latter one is good for white. But! 1) He will get the kind of
position he likes 2) I don't remember any of the long forced lines (baby
crying in the night has sort of reset my brain). 3) He might have something
prepared. So I went through the options and came up with:} 6. Nde2 {(!) I
immediately felt good when I played this. Ilja on the other hand looked very
unsettled. He very quickly played:} O-O {And after} 7. g3 {He instantly bashed
out:} b5 $6 {Very active. But moving pawns is like getting a tattoo - it can't
be undone.} 8. Bg2 Bb7 9. O-O b4 {Activity again. But maybe too much.} 10. Nd5
{Here I felt very good. White has a solid position without weaknesses. He also
controls more space (which I love). In general white should seek to keep his
space advantage or exchange it for another kinda of advantage - basically my
kind of chess.} Nbd7 $6 11. Nef4 {I would rather have a piece on d5 than a
pawn (bishop on g2 can sometime become bad).} Nxd5 12. Nxd5 a5 13. a3 {
Attacking his weakness and letting the rook on a1 into the game without moving
it.} Nf6 $2 {[#]Oops the devil taps you on the shoulder and laughs - meaning
You just feel that can't be right. He quickly got up and walked around in a
restless manner - bodylanguage clearly showing he didn't want to be here. I
felt good.} 14. Nxe7+ Qxe7 {Played instantly, almost defiantly.} 15. e5 {Yeah
baby yeah} Ne4 {Also instantly, and banged on the clock.} 16. exd6 Qxd6 17.
Qxd6 {Entering a very nice ending. As I am getting older I like endings much
better...} cxd6 {Also instantly. Very strange because it creates a new
weakness. But ok, Ilja want to be active and attack on the c-file.} 18. Bf4
Rfc8 19. Rfe1 {I felt white was more or less winning now.} d5 20. f3 Nc5 {Here
I got an idea based on the way he was playing and acting. I noticed that it
was somehow very important to him to react immediately to forcing moves. As if
he needed to say that he has seen everything. Here I noticed that if I take on
b4 and exchange on a8 he has to take back with the rook. So I calculated for
some time. Ilja got up and went walking and when he was some meters away I
played:} 21. axb4 {(!) And very quickly wrote it on the scoresheet. He
returned to the board and took back (halfway standing):} axb4 {I instantly
took on a8. He looked a bit puzzled but didn't wanted to look like everything
has not been foreseen and after only about a minute played:} 22. Rxa8 Bxa8 $2 {
After my reply:} 23. Bh3 $1 {He gave up! White is winning tons of material in
every line.} 1-0
